Boys and weapon play
What is it with boys and guns and swords?
Every stick that Evan picks up these days is a sword or gun. We do not have any guns or swords in our house…except for one broken squirt gun. I don’t even think we ever called that a gun.
He new fascination is the extension tube that connects to the vaccum cleaner. He says that it is his horse (he gallops around the house on it), but I am noticing that it is becoming more of a sword.
Is this some sort of testosterone thing? Should it be discouraged? I am not asking for answers…I just an unsure what I should be doing. Right now, we just tell him no pointing at people or animals.

I think that’s the best route…no pointing it at people or animals.

I’ve been thinking about this exact thing lately! My 5 year old actually used our vaccuum cleaner extension the other day as a lightsaber. We also only own a squirt gun. We’ve done the same thing, told them, just don’t point your pretend guns at other people.

When you figure it out please let me know. B is the same way and we don’t have those types of things in the house nor do we watch movies that depict sword fighting or shooting(at least not when the kids are around anyway)
I think they are just born that way. Isn’t it wild ?

I can’t even tell you how many vacuum extension poles I have been through at my house! If only I could convince the boy what it really is and get him to use in the manner it was intended life would be so much easier! Oh, and my house would be so much cleaner!

They just do it.

I could always say it’s the being in the Army thing, but it’s really the male thing… I wish I could just get him to stop setting up traps to capture me.

At our house, anything long is either a sword or a light saber. Even my 21-month-old daughter uses things as a sword or light saber (learned it from her brother, of course.) Crazy kids.

I don’t know. My 5 year old son has NEVER pretended anything was a gun.

I wish I had the answer. When you find out, let me know. Nicholas is at that phase, too.
